MAKING HISTORY--INTO FICTION. Using historical photographs, pictures from her travels, and her novels, Lisa demonstrates how she transforms the raw material of history into settings, stories, and characters that engage a modern reader. Presentation focuses either on Two Girls and Cate of the Lost Colony or Ophelia and Lady Macbeth’s Daughter. (Grades 7-12; adults) Pairs well with workshop I.
FROM PAGE ONE THROUGH PUBLICATION.
Getting started and persisting as a writer. The importance of reading. Discovering your writing process and your voice. What agents and editors do. The writer’s life. Designed to motivate and inform. (Grades 7-12; adults)
MY LIFE WITH WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. From directing a high-school parody of Macbeth to publishing Ophelia and Lady Macbeth’s Daughter, Lisa explores her changing relationship to Shakespeare, the creative process, and how reading and teaching literature helped her to find her calling as a writer. Also touches on artistic and critical representations of Shakespeare’s female characters. (Grades 9-12; adults)
DEATH OR MARRIAGE: THE ONLY OPTIONS FOR YA HEROINES? How Lisa navigates between comedy and tragedy in creating heroines who are historical yet relevant to modern readers. (Grades 9-12; adults)
All talks 45 minutes with Q&A
Projector required for presentations, except for "Death or Marriage."
